Family Orientation June 6 and 17Family Orientation
The Family Orientation is designed for care partners and family members who are new to the disease.  This interactive orientation provides an overview of memory loss and dementia, as well as an opportunity to meet others and to start getting connected with the Alzheimer’s Association.  All attendees will receive a free copy of “Coach Broyles Caregiver Playbook.”

Living a brain healthy lifestyle - june 17Living a Brain Healthy Lifestyle
The health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do. After attending this informative and engaging workshop, participants will be able to identify specific brain healthy foods, understand how physical exercise can improve brain health, learn mentally challenging activities and how they strengthen brain cells and recognize the importance of social activities in stimulating mind and body.

Brain Healthy CookingBrain Healthy Cooking
Many foods have been linked to maintaining and sustaining a healthy brain. This class will help participants identify and prepare brain healthy foods. Class attendees will identify why certain foods are more “brain healthy” as compared to others and a chef-led cooking demonstration will follow. Finally, all participants will enjoy a brain-healthy dinner.

Early Memory Loss - June 29Early Memory Loss
Early stage Alzheimer’s disease may require many changes in daily routines. However, there are a number of ways to maintain and even increase ones quality of life. These include improving nutrition, participating in physical exercise, and maintaining social and family relationships. Participants will learn about early memory loss and identify ways to enhance daily living by utilizing community resources, maintaining social and family relationships and applying new medical research and treatment trends.

Professional Education Opportunities

Reducing the risk of falls - June 11Reducing Risk of Falls
Reducing Risk of Falls helps to define falls and to understand both individual and surrounding risk factors for falls. The module includes two one-hour sessions. Attendees will learn to understand the benefits of mobility even for those at risk for falls; to identify key components of a falls incident report; and use information about the resident’s history and preferences to reduce falls risk.

 

Understanding Wandering - June 11Understanding Wandering
Understanding Wandering discusses why wandering occurs and defines wandering. The module includes two one-hour sessions. Attendees will learn to identify situations that may lead to wandering; explain the difference between safe and unsafe wandering; identify a resident at risk for wandering and apply strategies that promote safe wandering while preventing exit seeking.

The Alzheimer's Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter counts on over 500 volunteers each year. Please join us in helping achieve our vision of creating a world without Alzheimer's disease while optimizing quality of life for people who are affected by Alzheimer's disease. Whether you can spare only a few hours each year, a couple of hours a week or make a more significant time commitment, we hope you will consider joining this very special community.
